Folkestone, gateway to
the countryside
Folkestone is surrounded by beautiful scenery. Even
close to the town, the view from the Downs above the town is
spectacular (picture above) and stretches over the Channel Tunnel
terminal, across the town and to the sea.
The attractions of France are under one hour away
and nearby there is lots of beautiful countryside and pretty
villages such as Elham. Many woods are also nearby. Beaches and
cliffs stretch for miles in both directions along the coast with
many cliff and sea walks.
National cycle route one runs right through Folkestone
and will take you and your bike to either the cliffs of Dover
in one direction or the banks of the Royal Military Canal (below)
in the other.
