THE STORY OF THE MANOR
CLINIC
The Manor Clinic has been where it is today only since
1990. The Manor Clinic began as an amalgamation of two Folkestone
practices. Dr Jequier worked from his then home in Radnor Park
Road where he had an established practice, Drs Montgomery, Mallett
and Fernandes worked in a separate practice in what is now the
basement of the Tudor Lodge nursing home across the road from
the current practice in Manor Road.
The four Doctors together decided to join forces and
to refurbish what were then offices at 31 Manor Road. After extensive
building work, The Manor Clinic was ready to open on 17th December
1990, just a week before Christmas.
Computers appeared in the practice in 1993 and gradually
the practice grew with extra staff, patients and services. Dr
Montgomery retired in 1995 and his place was taken by Dr Roberts.
The next change was the retirement of Dr Mallett and later the
joining of Drs Paul and Phillipa Veenhuizen. Drs Veenhuizen unfortunately
decided to move to the Far North of Scotland in 1998 so had to
leave the practice. They were replaced by Dr Robinson, who stayed
for just over a year before going on maternity leave and then
moving to the South West of England. Dr Jequier left the practice
at the end of 2004.
The period from the end of 2004 through to the autumn
of 2005 has been a very difficult one for the practice, as due
to the shortage of GP`s throughout the country, there has been
only one full time GP, Dr Roberts, and two part time GP`s, Drs
Beach and Fernandes, the latter of whom could not spend very
much time in the practice due to his business commitments. The
practice has been relying heavily on locums during this time
and our then practice manager also left. Despite these difficulties,
the practice managed to score the highest in the whole of Shepway
in the newly introduced "quality of care" points system.
Looking to the future, the practice has now appointed
two new nurse practitioners and a new very capable manager who
has been promoted internally. We are optimistic as more new Doctors
reach the end of their training we will soon find a new GP to
join our team.
