Riverside Canterbury...Part two
This is the view most tourists see of the river
in Canterbury, the view from the high street. The boat looks very
tempting but as you will see when you walk the river, it can only
in fact travel a hundred yars or so before it reaches a weir.
Of course, you now know this, as does our little
friend below, but the tourists stuck on the high street dont
!
Starting from where we left off on the last page,
an about turn will take us along the southern portion of the river
Stour through Canterbury.
The river goes under a bridge to emerge at another
weir. You can walk over the weir, which is in several parts, and
look back at the bridge.
Unless you are unlucky and catch a group of schoolchildren
walking to their coach in the coach park, usually there is hardly
a tourist to be seen in this part of town.
Except, of course the occasional disappointed boat
traveller.
From the weir, you can walk trough yet another park
back towards the town centre again.
Another hidden spot.
No, that is not the end of the trip, there are still two
more very good options left...
Once it has gone under the main shopping street the river
passes through Greyfriars Gardens, another little park worth seeking
out.
For the really ambitious, there is the Stour Valley Walk.
You can take this all the way from Lenham near Ashford to the
sea near Richborough. Using the many railway stations en route
it is an easy matter to split the walk up over several weekends.
Full details in the guide book from most local bookshops.
